Anberlin with Noise Ratchet, Number One Fan, and Mourning September
Don't compare Orlando, Florida's Anberlin to another rock band. Just don't. All lazy journalism aside, and with lead singer Stephen Christian citing influences such as The Smiths, The Cure and Jeff Buckley, it's clear that, though a major contender in the burgeoning independent rock 'n roll scene, Anberlin is a concerted effort of undeniable creative independence. Combining traditional rock goodness with Southern charm and an experimental edge, Anberlin gives new spins on good things without falling into the contrived or pretentious.

Dillinger Escape Plan with Every Time I Die, Zao, Misery Signals, and Bad Acid Trip
The Dillinger Escape Plan creates maniacally intense, crushingly metallic, and decidedly hardcore punk-infused jazz time-signature invoking compositions displaying an unparalleled musical bravery, precision musicianship, meticulously thought-out, and complex structuring and rigorous physical endurance. The band's guitarists and drummer are regular features in publications geared toward the guitar and drum-playing set. The depth of extremity and mental challenge presented by their music virtually defies description, at once recalling the mind-wandering spirit of MahavishnuOrchestra, the complex heavy metal of later-era Death, Cynic's solitary death metal achievement, and the progressive hard rock of Rush. Their performances bring to mind the anarchic charge of early Guns N' Roses shows, and the sophistication that drives their craft should awe fans of classy art rock bands like Radiohead.

Crooked Fingers with Hymn from the Hurricane and Swiss Army
Crooked Fingers is the latest project from one of the rock underground's most enigmatic songwriters, Eric Bachmann. Eric got his first bit of recognition as the front man for the Archers Of Loaf, one of the most popular and critically lauded bands of the mid-to-late 90's underground scene. Crooked Fingers was born in early 2000 as Bachmann emerged from the dissolution of Archers with a new band and a new album. Their self titled debut, Crooked Fingers, may have taken some fans by surprise, at least those expecting the high-energy noise pop of the Archers. Instead Bachmann unleashed a collection of powerfully melancholy songs about the down and out, the forgotten and abused, the people you avoid on the street...their stories all woven around dark, baroque melodies that conjure images of smokey barrooms as opposed to gilded stages.

Buried at Sea with He Do the Policeman In Different Voices and Church of Gravitron
Chicago's very own Buried at Sea is a flowing wave of trance like massiveness. They combine elements of Doom, Space-rock, and experimental noise to create a sound of thick and heavy textures. Voted one of the heaviest bands of the year by many, Buried at Sea have been compared to bands like Sunn0))), Eyehategod, Burning Witch and Neurosis but definitely carry a unique sound that's all their own. Not for the weak at heart, their shows are known to shatter eardrums. Actually headlining the show, He Do The Policeman In Different Voices features D. Bushon of EXAM and J. Tvrdik of Back When. They are a two piece doom project involving all of the elements of Earth, the Melvins, Khanate and Harvey Milk.

Explosions in the Sky with Adem and Mr. 1986
Hailing from the sultry, barren landscape of Austin, TX, Explosions in the Sky are some of the most sincere folks you will ever meet. Aside from being nice guys, they play some of the most passionate, powerful instrumental music you will ever hear. Equal parts romance and tragedy, their beautiful washes of melody have the tendency to ignite into head-spinning walls of noise. Possibly the loudest live band ever, their sound proves to be every bit as triumphant as their name implies.

Matt Nathanson with Charlotte Martin
Irrepressible singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson doesn't just own the stage. He makes it his b*%#h. Acerbic, self-aware and irreverent, Nathanson sings beautifully cathartic songs that threaten to break your heart and then, just when you need it most, says something so wholly inappropriate, or recounts a hilarious story (often one that inspired a song) with such detail and candor, that you can't help but fall in love. Armed with a 12 -string guitar, an arsenal of confessional songs, a cello player named Matt Fish, and the dictum, "It's one thing to be depressed, quite another to be depressing," Nathanson has channeled his self-professed need to be the center of attention into an impressive career as an independent artist.

The Makers with The Terminals
As respected figures in the underground rock 'n roll scene, The Makers have remained steadfastly opposed to the idea of stagnation for the sake of easy niche marketing. Since emerging into the fierce world of garage-punk in 1991, they have stubbornly pushed their musical boundaries far beyond expectations. In 2000, The Makers confounded any thoughts of pigeonholing theirs as merely a garage rock phenomenon with the release of their crossover, concept recording Rock Star God, which put them on top of college radio play-lists and critics' top ten lists worldwide. Take a look at the band's resume: They've toured around the world and recorded well over a hundred original songs. Live, The Makers take no prisoners, performing with an energy that has made their shows legendary. They've earned the respect of artists from Joey Ramone to Marilyn Manson, from Jon Spencer to Billy Childish. They've recorded for labels such as Estrus, Sympathy for the Record Industry, and now Sub Pop.

Q and Not U with El Guapo and Latitude, Longitude
In 2000, Dischord records signed a unique new band that both embodied the sound of their forefathers while pushing the boundaries of Dischord-style rock to new arenas. Q and Not U, formed from ex-members of Elusive, were straightforward and enigmatic. Their full-length debut, No Kill No Beep Beep, proved their ability to write complex yet catchy rock songs with quite a bit of repeat value. Through extensive touring, they began to cement a die-hard fan base with their live shows characterized by wild and upbeat good times for all.

The Beautiful Mistake with Tokyo Rose, The New Transit Direction, and My New Life
It's been a few years since THE BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE got their start, but if you ask bassist Jon Berndtson, they still feel like they're just getting started. And in many ways, they indeed are. Though seasoned road veterans, having hit the road several times both domestically and abroad, THE BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE finally feel like they're making headway, gaining recognition and attaining satisfaction with their efforts. Since the band's 2002 debut album, Light A Match, For I Deserve To Burn (The Militia Group), THE BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE really have made noteworthy progress, quickly rising to become one of the label's all-time best-selling releases.

The Good Life with Neva Dinova and The '89 Cubs
The Good Life started out as a means for Tim Kasher to use a songwriting approach that differed from his other projects (namely, Cursive), but it didn't take long for the solo project to become a band, and for that band to finally come into its own. The Good Life's sound has evolved from the refined, quiet pop of the first full-length, Novena on a Nocturn, to the moody hooks of 2002's Black Out, to the sing-along anthems of divorce and disillusionment found on the recent Lovers Need Lawyers EP. The sum of these parts is found on their new record, Album of the Year.

Damien Jurado with Richard Buckner and Dolorean
Urban folk singer/songwriter Damien Jurado quietly built up one of the strongest catalogs on the indie scene, earning high critical praise yet somehow never quite getting his proper due. Nick Drake had a definite impact on much of his work, but Jurado modeled his career on more idiosyncratic, unpredictable figures like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, or Randy Newman -- songwriters who followed their own muse wherever it took them, whether fans and critics agreed or not. His independent-mindedness was born at least in part from the influence of punk, and one of the results was a concern for emotional authenticity that led him to delve into other people's lives instead of his own. Many of Jurado's best songs spun concise, literate tales of quiet everyday despair, which often earned him comparisons to short story writer Raymond Carver. But his storytelling bent -- not to mention his ambivalence toward confessional material -- arose from a stronger grounding in traditional folk!
than spiritual compatriots like Elliott Smith or Cat Power. And with detours into pop, roots rock, full-fledged electric indie rock, and even found-sound experiments, Jurado ensured that his body of work was impossible to completely pin down.

Vic Chesnutt
When Vic first entered the scene with his exquisite melodies, off-beat yet erudite poetry and sharp tongue, he was instantly recognized as an artist that had a unique vision. He simply sounded like no one else. During a string of dates, Michael Stipe repeatedly saw Vic and was moved to invite him into a recording studio. They recorded the songs that became his debut album, Little and Vic's career effectively began. Vic has made 9 albums to date as well as 2 albums in collaboration with Widespread Panic under the name 'Brute.' He was the subject of a documentary in 1992 entitled "Speed Racer" directed by noted indie filmmaker Peter Sillen. In 1995 he had bit part in Billy Bob Thornton's film Slingblade. In 1996, Columbia Records put together Sweet Relief II: Gravity Of The Situation - The Songs of Vic Chesnutt, a benefit album to assist musicians with medical and financial hardship.

Matthew Sweet with Velvet Crush
Of the significant bands and artists to emerge in the '90s, Matthew Sweet is the odd man out. During a decade when cynicism, overstatement and mean-spiritedness ruled, Sweet found a sizable audience by expressing himself with unselfconsciousness, subtlety, penetrating honesty and the sheer joy of constructing something cool. While so many of his contemporaries disdained rock n' roll's past, Sweet deftly channeled it, picking up where his inspirations from previous decades had left off. A sophisticated, aural architect, Sweet absorbed the work of 60's rock's three "Bs" - the Beach Boys, Beatles and Byrds, along with '70s avatars Neil Young and Big Star - with such a deep understanding of the spirit as well as craft behind the music of the old masters that he was able to use these timeless palates in a fresh, highly personal way.

The Donnas with The Von Bondies, Starlite Desperation, and Sneaker 2 Bomb
Aspiring to nothing more than a good old-fashioned rock & roll party, the Donnas won a cult following and considerable media attention in the late '90s after scoring a record deal right out of high school. Early on, they were invariably described as "the Ramones meet the Runaways," with a definite emphasis on the former (they'd even adopted identical first names as a tribute). But their bratty high-school-delinquent image was clearly indebted to the latter, as their songs concerned themselves mostly with boys, booze, drugs, and hated classmates. As the Donnas grew up and polished their technical abilities, their music evolved into a distinctly female take on cock-rock metal, drawing more from AC/DC, Kiss, and Mötley Crüe than from punk.

Minus the Bear with Detachment Kit, Askeleton, The Firebird Band
With catchy song titles like "Hey, Wanna Throw Up? Get Me Naked," "Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!," and "Lemurs, Man, Lemurs," it's hard not to be at least a little bit curious about this Seattle-based quintet. Featuring members of Botch, Kill Sadie, and Sharks Keep Moving, Minus the Bear emerged on Seattle's music scene in 2001 with the release of their six-song EP This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic. Though the song titles may lead one to believe that they're a novelty act, Minus the Bear provides polished, shrewdly arranged songs. Finger-tapped guitar riffs mixed with catchy melodies and unexpected time changes keep listeners interested and entertained. Minus the Bear has built a loyal fan base through extensive touring and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

New Found Glory
For New Found Glory, it's not just a matter of having a chance banner year or fluke popular album that has kept the act at the forefront of the pop-rock scene. It's more like a banner career - built through the efforts, determination and talent within the band. Two years ago, the quintet released their most successful album to date, the Gold-awarded (now with sales approaching Platinum) Sticks And Stones. That album was the follow-up to the band's self-titled, major-label, debut - which sold in excess of 500,000, generating their first Gold record. But not great bands are not made based on their impressive sales figures. Fortunately, New Found Glory understand, and perhaps more importantly, practice the concept of success via a strong dedication to the material they've penned and a commitment to the enthusiastic audience that's supported them throughout the years. From their humble beginnings as a garage band in Coral Springs, Fla. back in 1997, to the international acclaim !
the act has received in recent years, New Found Glory has never lost sight of their original goal of delivering their absolute best, whether it be on stage or on recording.
